Until the establishment of Grosse Point Light, vessels traveling near Evanston faced a deadly shoal in the waters of Lake Michigan. This station became the first in the nation to use a photoelectric cell that automatically turns the beacon on and off using light sensors, triggering the end of the era of lightkeepers.
